The Bayeux Tapestry BSKL Kuala Lumpur 22-02-2012

Year 7 have been studying the most famous date in British History-1066, The Battle of Hastings.

They began with the contenders to the throne when Edward the Confessor died, carefully assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each. With this information they produced adverts for each contender, in groups. Next it was time for the battle itself and they studied the key moments and all the reasons why William of Normandy became William the Conqueror.

Their homework was to research and recreate the weapons and clothing of a Norman or Saxon warrior, to be used for their Battle of Hastings tableaux. During the making of the tableaux they had to strike poses for each of the key moments of the battle, up to its bloody end…a modern day Bayeux Tapestry..

Life was better for civilians during World War II. Discuss.

Year 6 have been studying life on The Home Front during World War Two.

They conducted group research on areas such as evacuation, rationing, the blackout and the Blitz. They then used all of this information to create games on the Home Front including   ‘War-opoly’ and ‘War Snakes & Ladders’.

As a celebration of their learning we held ‘Blackout parties’ where each child brought in a recipe made from ration recipes. We blacked out the windows, dressed up in 1940s costumes (complete with evacuation tags and gas-mask boxes) and played our Home Front games.

Year 6 used their new knowledge to stage a debate with the motion ‘Life was better during WWII’. They were encouraged to use powerful, persuasive arguments and to back their points up with evidence.
